Energy Outreach Colorado rescues disabled couple from dangerous living conditions

A disabled couple in Weld County is safe and warm in their mobile home after a series of events that could have led to tragedy. Energy Outreach Colorado and our supporters gave them the ability to resolve their dangerous situation.

When Doug and Sandy of Lochbuie turned on their furnace for the first time this fall, their 30-year-old home filled with the smell of natural gas. They called out a utility representative, who said the furnace controller was out. Worse, he said their new $1,300 water heater that had recently been installed wasn’t vented properly and was pumping out poisonous carbon monoxide.

“That really scared us,” Sandy recalled. “It was really a huge blessing in disguise that our furnace wasn’t working right so that we found out about the water heater.”

At the suggestion of the utility representative, Doug and Sandy called the Crisis Intervention Program managed by Energy Outreach Colorado. A local vendor arrived quickly to fix the furnace and install proper venting at no cost.

Doug and Sandy are both in their late 50s and live on social security disability payments. Doug, an Army veteran, suffers from a spinal cord condition that confines him to a wheelchair. Sandy has been in chronic pain since a texting driver ran a red light and plowed into her while she was on a motorcycle.

“We truly cannot thank you enough for this gift of a heating system,” Sandy said. “Love and hugs to all those that helped make this happen for us.”
