Reduce your upcoming energy bills while staying toasty

Colorado temperatures are falling as fast as the remaining leaves, so follow Energy Outreach Colorado’s Top 10 Cold Weather Energy Tips to reduce your upcoming energy bills while staying toasty.

  1. Banish drafty air leaks by using caulk and foam sealant to close cracks and gaps around door and window frames and where plumbing, ducting and electrical wiring come through walls.
  2. Avoid throwing money out the window by placing a heavy duty, clear plastic sheet inside window frames.
  3. Take advantage of daytime free solar power by opening window coverings on west- and south-facing windows during the warmest hours of the day.
  4. For every one degree you lower your thermostat, you save about 2% on your heating bills. Keep it around 68 degrees, health permitting.
  5. Install a programmable thermostat to automatically lower the temperature several degrees while you’re asleep or away from home.
  6. Stop warm air from going up the chimney by checking the fireplace flue damper to make sure it fits tightly and is closed unless a fire is burning.
  7. Heating water is about 18 percent of your energy use, so turn down your water heater to the warm setting (120 degrees) and wash clothes in cold water.
  8. To save electricity, set your refrigerator to between 37 and 40 degrees and your freezer to 0 degrees.
  9. In addition, switch to LED light bulbs and unplug appliances and electronics when not in use – even if they are turned off.
  10. If you or someone you know needs help paying for home energy, call toll-free 1-866-HEAT-HELP (1-866-432-8435). If you know someone whose furnace doesn’t work and they can’t afford to fix it, call toll-free 1-855-469-4328. Or go to energyoutreach.org/get-help for information.
