Energy Outreach Colorado and two other energy-related organizations have partnered to lower energy usage and costs at an Eagle thrift store operated by nonprofit Vail Valley Cares. The $11,790 project was supported by an Energy Outreach Colorado grant, Holy Cross Energy utility rebates, and technical support from Energy Smart Colorado.

"We were frustrated with our fluorescent lighting because bulbs and ballasts were frequently going out,” said Greg Osteen, executive director of Vail Valley Cares. Energy Smart Colorado installed high-efficiency LED lighting throughout the thrift store, which is expected to save more than $2,000 in annual electricity costs. Energy Outreach Colorado managed the project through its Nonprofit Energy Efficiency Program.

"The money we save helps fuel our community grants and our scholarship programs,” Osteen said. “This year we were able to give $312,000 in grants to community help organizations and $20,000 in scholarship to Colorado Mountain College."
