Top 7 Increasing Costs Impacting Colorado Front Range Residents

There’s hardly a person who lives along Colorado’s Front Range who isn’t familiar with rising living costs. According to a new U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report, the region encompassing Denver, Boulder and Greeley saw a 3.1 percent increase over the past year in the price of consumer goods and services.

When households make decisions on how to allocate their limited resources, it becomes more difficult to cover all the bases – including home energy – when prices increase at the current rate, which is greater than in previous 12-month periods.  That’s when nonprofit assistance organizations like Energy Outreach Colorado play a critical role in stabilizing families and communities.

Here are some price comparisons between the first half of 2016 and the first half of 2017 included in the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics report covering Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Clear Creek, Denver, Douglas, Elbert, Gilpin, Jefferson, Park and Weld counties:

  1. Gasoline up 16%
  2. Household natural gas up 9.3%
  3. Household electricity up 7.6%
  4. Mortgage payments up 5.7%
  5. Rent up 4.9%
  6. Food prices up 2.1%
  7. Medical care up 1.9%
