DENVER – Thanksgiving means cozy family
gatherings and cold-weather fun for many Coloradans. But for those
less-fortunate, this week begins a season of worry about how to keep up
with high energy bills and stay warm and safe.
Energy Outreach Colorado (EOC), a non-profit
organization that raises funds for energy assistance, is already
fielding calls from agencies that provide emergency assistance and
individuals seeking help paying energy bills they can’t afford. EOC is
distributing $5 million in critically-needed energy assistance funding
between now and next October to help thousands of Colorado households
afford energy for their homes.
The nonprofit raises funds through
foundation, corporate, government and individual donations. The funding
is distributed as grants to nearly 130 emergency assistance agencies
across the state, including the Colorado Low-Income Energy Assistance
Program (LEAP). Assistance payments are determined locally by agency
case workers and payments for overdue energy bills are credited directly
to utility companies.
"This is the time of year when limited
income households start feeling the pain of having to worry about
whether they can afford to heat their home for the winter,” said Skip
Arnold, executive director of Energy Outreach Colorado. “The economic
downturn has taken a drastic toll on many, including those who have
never had to ask for help.”
