DENVER – The Center of the American West at the University
of Colorado at Boulder today released its latest report, “High Energy
Prices & Low-Income Americans, Reducing the Risk of Unintended Injury.”
Authors of the
report are Patty Limerick and Jason L. Hanson. Limerick is faculty
director and Board Chair of the Center of the American West, University
of Colorado history professor, and board member of Energy Outreach
Colorado.
Energy
Outreach Colorado, a nonprofit that funds energy assistance and energy
efficiency measures for low-income households, funded and provided
information for the report. It is available at
http://www.energyoutreach.org/AmericanWest.asp.
“Our
publication describes the challenge of transitioning to a “new energy
economy” while avoiding a negative impact on lower-income households’
ability to afford home energy,” said Limerick.
“Because of
the increasing costs that come with the research, design and
construction of new and renewable energy sources, policy makers must be
sensitive to any unintended consequences such as limiting the ability of
lower-income Coloradans to afford home energy and have equal access to
these new technologies,” she added.
Skip Arnold,
executive director of Energy Outreach Colorado, stated, “We’re grateful
to Patty and the Center of the American West for bringing attention to
the need for innovation in crafting energy policies that are both
environmentally responsible and sensitive to their financial impact.”
