Local Non Profits Help Senior Stay Safe and Warm

June 4, 2008

PUEBLO A Pueblo senior citizen is the thankful owner of a new, high-efficiency water heater, thanks to the joint efforts of several local nonprofits and utility companies.

When Pueblo-based Smart Growth Advocates had a few hundreds dollars left over from a Colorado Department of Health and Environment grant, they contacted Energy Outreach Colorado to see where it could best be put to use. EOC, a statewide organizations that raises funds for energy assistance and efficiency grants, leveraged the funding with matching donations from Xcel Energy and Aquila to put together a $1,200 grant, then worked with Catholic Charities of Pueblo to locate a needy homeowner.

Homeowner Elmer A. was living in a home with a broken down water heater, inadequate venting and an out-of-code flex connector. This unsafe situation was quickly remedied when contractor Wright-Jones of Pueblo installed the new appliance.

“I sure appreciate every bit of the work that was put into my home,” he said. “It helped me out so much. Without it I wouldn’t have hot water right now!”

“We’re thrilled that our small amount of funds resulted in such a big difference for a senior in need,” said Vickie Massan of Smart Growth Advocates. “We’d like to see a lot more of this type of collaboration benefit Coloradans.”
