Energy Outreach Distributes $1.01 Million
Following Coldest January in 28 Years

February 1, 2007

DENVER – As Colorado’s coldest January in 28 years slips and slides to an end, Energy Outreach Colorado is distributing $1.01 million in energy assistance funding to emergency assistance organizations across the state.

“Many of Colorado’s families and seniors have been hard pressed to pay their home energy bills during milder weather, so the heating bills they will be seeing in February after the past month’s extremely cold temperatures are really going to set them back,” said Skip Arnold, executive director of Energy Outreach Colorado.

Arnold noted that, based on National Weather Service data, January 2007 was more than 60 percent colder than last January, and in fact was the coldest January in Colorado since 1979.

Energy Outreach Colorado is providing energy assistance funding to 100 emergency assistance sites across the state, including Catholic Charities, Salvation Army and Association for Senior Citizens. It is Energy Outreach’s second funding distribution of the 2006-07 heating season. In total, through four quarterly payments, the non-profit plans to contribute $6.15 million this year for energy assistance. Of that, $2.15 million will go to the Colorado LEAP program and $4 million will go to other emergency assistance organizations.

According to Energy Outreach Colorado, the 2006-07 heating season has been the toughest on record for Colorado’s income-limited residents. Federal and state funding reductions have resulted in a drop in the average amount of energy assistance that each household receives – from $550 in 2005-06 to about $280 this season.

Residents who are able to help seniors, the disabled and families with children pay energy bills can make a tax-deductible donation by going to Energy Outreach Colorado’s website, www.EnergyOutreach.org. Many energy companies operating in the state will match their customers’ donations and collect donations through customer bills.

Coloradans in need should call toll-free 1-866-HEAT-HELP (1-866-432-8435) to obtain a LEAP application or to find an emergency assistance organization near them with energy assistance funds available.
