Colorado Elementary Schools Program
Because children have a strong influence on family energy usage, Energy
Outreach in 2003 developed the Energy Hog Traveling Road Show. This
no-cost, fun and unique educational experience is available to
elementary schools throughout Colorado that have a free and reduced
lunch program. Since its inception, the school program has reached more than
30,000 students. |

Through a game called “Wheel of Energy” kids discover where energy comes
from, how energy gets to their homes, how they might be wasting energy,
and most importantly how they can save energy, which helps their
families save money and helps the environment too. But look out; an
Energy Hog may be lurking! An Energy Hog is a rascally character who
loves to waste energy. But there’s no need to worry because the Energy
Hog Traveling Road Show comes equipped with its very own trusty Energy
Hog Buster. The Energy Hog Buster is an expert on saving energy and
busting energy hogs. The Buster will help teach kids simple ways to save
energy so they can bust those Energy Hogs at home! Kids can become
Energy Hog Busters too by participating in the Energy Hog Traveling Road
Show and visiting www.EnergyHog.org
to receive their official certification.

National Energy Hog Campaign
As Colorado’s energy costs began rising in 2001, Energy Outreach
recognized the need to raise public awareness about the impact this has
on low-income families who spend close to half of their monthly income
on their energy bill. Thus, the Energy Hog campaign was born. Inspired
by Energy Outreach Colorado and the Colorado Governor’s Office of Energy
Management and Conservation, the Energy Hog was created by the Ad
Council (creators of Smokey Bear) and has become one of the “Top 10”
campaigns of all current Ad Council initiatives.
The national campaign encourages families across the country to make
wise energy choices by raising their awareness of saving energy at home.
Through an interactive website,
www.EnergyHog.org, kids are empowered to take the lead at home and
become Official Energy Hog Busters.
Because of the national scope of the campaign, Energy Outreach Colorado
transferred its sponsorship in 2005 to the Alliance to Save Energy, base
in Washington, D.C. The Alliance to Save Energy is a coalition of
prominent business, government, environmental, and consumer leaders who
promote the efficient and clean use of energy worldwide to benefit
consumers, the environment, economy and national security. To find out
