Cold? Check out our Top 6 No-Cost Home Heating Tips

To cope with this week's winter temperatures, keep our Top 6 No-Cost Home Heating Tips in mind:

  1. Check that your heating vents are not blocked so that heat flows throughout your home. Make sure there are no flammable materials in the same room as your heater.
  2. Change your furnace filter if you haven’t done so within the last three months so that a buildup of dust and dirt isn’t hampering air flow.
  3. Portable electric space heaters are not the most efficient way to heat your home, but if you are using one, make sure to plug it directly into a wall rather than an extension cord. Turn it off whenever you leave the room and keep any flammable materials at least three feet away.
  4. Prevent a home fire by checking that power and extension cords are not frayed, cracked or cut, and are certified by an independent testing lab.
  5. Keep firefighting materials nearby. These include dry powder fire extinguishers, a tarp or heavy blanket, sand, salt, baking soda and water.
  6. Avoid resorting to an unsafe measure to heat your home, such as an oven or an outside appliance like a barbecue grill. This could result in a fire or a buildup of carbon monoxide.
