Weatherization - a winning solution to lower costs and improved home health

According to the U.S. Energy Department, home weatherization can significantly reduce energy bills while lowering health risks, yet more than $82 billion is wasted nationally each year due to energy inefficiency in our housing stock. Many people struggle to pay their high utility costs, which can result in unhealthy and uncomfortable living conditions and ultimately lead to a default in bill payment.

Assistance is available from Energy Outreach Colorado (EOC) who, in partnership with Xcel Energy, Black Hills Energy, Atmos Energy, Colorado Energy Office and the Denver Office of Strategic Partnerships, provides free weatherization services to limited-income Coloradans living in single family homes, apartments, and mobile homes.

“We’re committed to ensuring that limited-income families and seniors in our state have access to the benefits of weatherization,” said Luke Ilderton, EOC Chief Programs Officer. “With Colorado housing costs at a premium, it’s critical to preserve our existing affordable housing by investing in energy-efficient equipment so that people can remain secure and safe in their homes and better afford home energy.”

In 2017, EOC worked with local weatherization agencies and vendors to install energy-efficiency measures in more than 305 homes and 2,565 apartments statewide.
