Energy Outreach Colorado empowers new business owner

Six months ago, Denise could no longer spend enough time with her elementary school-aged daughter and keep up with the long hours and travel necessary for her marketing position. So, she switched to a less time-consuming position as a receptionist and launched her own digital marketing business on the side.

“It’s finding the balance between everything that’s important,” said the 31-year-old single mom.

Starting out, her income was much lower and the bills piled up. She couldn’t pay the full amount on the monthly energy bills for the condo she rents in Littleton, and eventually received a disconnect notice. She was searching for another part-time job when a friend told her about Energy Outreach Colorado’s bill payment assistance.

“I was so relieved to find an organization to help people like me who are trying to get ahead,” Denise said.

“Because I was able to get back on track with my energy account, our power didn’t get shut off, I didn’t have to get another job, and I didn’t have to send my daughter to live with her dad until I could build up my business.”

In the months since then, Denise has grown her digital marketing business – even doing website and social media projects for the real-estate office where she’s still a receptionist.

“Everyone’s been really supportive,” she said. “My daughter and I are really, really grateful for the help. We can now focus on continuing in a positive direction.”
