Cold temperatures heighten need for energy bill payment assistance

As Colorado’s temperatures plunge and home energy bills rise, Energy Outreach Colorado (EOC) and our partners are assisting low-income families and seniors across the state who struggle to keep up with their payments.

Between October 1 and December 31 of 2017, EOC paid 4,945 home energy bills for households at risk of having their energy shut off. The number of bills paid increased more than 20 percent over the same period last year and the average payment of $421 was nearly 10 percent higher.

Of the households receiving assistance, about 25 percent included a disabled family member, like Tammy who lives with a brain injury and multiple sclerosis. More than 75 percent rent their homes and most received some other type of assistance, such as food stamps or Medicaid.

EOC is the only nonprofit in the state that raises funds for energy assistance through individual donors, corporations and foundations. Each year we distribute these dollars to a network of nearly 100 local assistance organizations across the state, and payments are made directly to a local utility or fuel company on behalf of a qualified energy assistance recipient.
