CARE lowers energy costs for Steamboat Springs retiree

Steamboat Springs senior Karen Dooley will stay warm and safe in her mountain trailer home this winter, thanks to free energy improvements installed by the Colorado Affordable Residential Energy program (CARE) managed by Energy Outreach Colorado.

Dooley, 66, is a widow and recently retired after working in the local retail and food service industries for 45 years. On her fixed income, she couldn’t have afforded the extensive repairs to her home on her own, but she met the 80 percent of area income qualifications for CARE.

“I’m so grateful and thankful because every day I can feel the difference,” she said.

She has lived in her 910-square-foot trailer for 31 years, and was struggling with high energy bills because of its weathered condition. CARE, which partners with regional utility providers and local weatherization agencies, brought in energy specialists from Yampa Valley Sustainability Council and the Northwest Colorado Council of Governments to seal drafts and air leaks, tighten heater ducts, increase insulation and install an energy efficient refrigerator, light bulbs and custom storm windows. The improvements were funded by Yampa Valley Electric Association and Atmos Energy. Overall, air leakage in Dooley’s home was reduced by 53 percent.
