Energy Outreach and our supporters guide Broomfield family through stormy times

Family means everything to Nicole S. of Broomfield, even when it requires sacrificing her own needs to care for her daughter and 6-year-old grandson. So when her budget was hit by a series of unexpected expenses and she couldn’t afford to pay the energy bill for their apartment, she sought help – for them.

Energy Outreach Colorado and our generous supporters made sure she could continue to provide for her family during last summer’s “perfect storm.” Her daughter, Lacey, underwent two surgeries, during which Nicole cared for her and her grandson, Ayden. The impact of Lacey's medical costs, her own missed work hours and an $80 monthly rent increase were beyond what Nicole could handle.

“My grandson needs to eat and bathe,” she said simply. “We almost ended up in a women’s shelter.”

Instead, they received energy bill payment assistance through one of Energy Outreach Colorado’s partner assistance agencies. Nicole, who tracks her budget “to the penny” with experience gained through 25 years of managing her own house cleaning business, said it was a blessing to get caught up on her energy bill and have her daughter receive a clean bill of health.

“We’re greatly, greatly appreciative of the help,” Nicole said. “To get ahead and be able to pay it forward would be awesome. We’d like to help another family like ours through a tough time. Everyone else we know is struggling, too.”
