Entrepreneurial couple pursues dream with help from Energy Outreach Colorado

Running their own successful construction company is a dream shared by Joseph and Jessica Medina of Ordway. But making it a reality has been an unexpected struggle for the couple since they launched J & J Industries eight months ago.

Both have worked in the industry for years, so they thought they were prepared for what they were getting into. But a large commercial build-out project in Pueblo got bogged down with change orders, permits and backed-up supplies, shrinking their cash flow and putting them behind on other expenses, including their home energy bill.

Fortunately, the support of Energy Outreach Colorado and its donors allowed them to keep up with their utility bill while taking on side construction jobs until they managed to close out the project.

“Thank God for programs like Energy Outreach Colorado that help people out during difficult times,” said Joseph, 40, who started working in construction while in high school in Rocky Ford. Their household includes their two children and Jessica’s parents, so it was a relief for them not to have their electricity turned off.

“We were excited to start our own business, but this project didn’t go as smoothly as we’d have liked,” Joseph added. “Our tools are our livelihood. When you put all of your energy into something, you can’t just go out and get another job.”
