Green Ridge Meadows affordable senior community gets EOC energy make-over

Low-income seniors living at the Green Ridge Meadows Apartments in Evergreen are looking forward to lower energy costs and a more healthy and comfortable living environment, thanks to energy efficiency upgrades being managed by Energy Outreach Colorado.

The 79-apartment, affordable senior living community is owned by Jefferson County Housing Authority. Energy Outreach Colorado secured a $200,000 grant from the Department of Energy to help fund the project, which focuses on improvements with a pay-back ratio of five years or less. Jeffco Housing is investing an additional $87,000.

Because residents’ rents include utility costs, the lower operating and maintenance costs resulting from the improvements will help maintain affordable rent and allow investment in other facility and program needs. Improvements are being installed by local, independent contractors and include energy efficient HVAC equipment, refrigerators, internal and exterior lighting, water fixtures and pipe insulation.

“Energy Outreach Colorado has managed projects such as this one since 2008 because of the huge impact on making home energy more affordable for low-income Coloradans, and the ability to preserve Colorado’s existing affordable housing inventory,” said Luke Ilderton, EOC’s director of energy efficiency programs.

The Green Ridge Meadows project is one of six affordable-housing improvement projects totaling $1.3 million that Energy Outreach Colorado is managing this year. Others are located in Alamosa, Colorado Springs, Denver and Loveland.
