School lesson about charitable giving extends beyond the classroom

Cherry Hills Christian School’s “Penny Wars” raises $4,087 for EOC

Fourth-graders at Cherry Hills Christian School emptied their pockets and piggy banks in a “Penny Wars” competition, then presented the $4,087 in proceeds to Energy Outreach Colorado to help struggling Coloradans  keep up with their home energy bills.

For several weeks, students dropped coins in their jars to see which of three classrooms could collect the most money. They also learned about how electricity works, how important it is for daily living, and how some Colorado households struggle to pay their home energy bills and sometimes go without electricity and heat. At the end of the lesson, all students were treated to a popcorn party to celebrate their accomplishment.

Tess Richey from Energy Outreach Colorado visited the school to accept the students’ generous donation and answer their questions about energy assistance and how their donations will help about 10 households keep up with their energy bills.
