Rifle retiree enjoying a warm home after years without a furnace

A retired senior in Rifle is thankful to have a working furnace in his home again after more than two years of making do with a wood-burning stove.

Edward Degner’s broken furnace was fixed for free through the federally-funded Crisis Intervention Program that Energy Outreach Colorado manages for Colorado.

“I’m just a happy guy,” Degner said. Because of his limited income, he hadn’t been able to spend the money for a service call and possible costly repairs.

As it turned out, an EnergyWise furnace repairman from Grand Junction - part of EOC’s licensed and certified statewide network – made short work of the repair. All it took to get the furnace up and running again was an $8 part.

“I am thrilled to have heat in the house again,” said Degner. During the past two winters he was afraid to leave his home for any period of time in case the pipes would freeze while he was gone.

“Now I can just turn on the heat and go anywhere I want to,” he said.
