Energy Outreach Has Assistance Funds for Sizzling Energy Bills

July 10, 2013

DENVER – As Coloradans cope with sizzling summer temperatures, Energy Outreach Colorado (EOC) has energy bill assistance funding available across the state to help vulnerable families and seniors remain safe in their homes.

“Hot summer temperatures can be life-threatening for seniors, families with young children and people with special needs who may not be able to keep up with their energy bills or escape the heat by going to an air-conditioned shopping mall or swimming pool,” said Skip Arnold, executive director for Energy Outreach, a statewide non-profit agency that raises money for low-income energy assistance.

“It is also helpful for concerned citizens to check on elderly relatives, friends, neighbors or others who may have difficulty escaping the heat,” he added.

EOC provides energy assistance funding throughout the year to 125 assistance organizations across Colorado, including The Salvation Army, faith-based organizations and senior assistance centers. Since last October Energy Outreach has contributed $7.5 million in energy assistance, as well as millions of dollars in grants to increase the energy efficiency of affordable housing and nonprofit facilities.

Here are some simple tips for keeping your home cool:

  • Because running your clothes dryer produces heat, schedule that task for later in the evening after the sun has set.
  • The dishwasher can be another heat producer, so choose the “no heat” option for your drying cycle.
  • Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), which emit less heat and last longer.
  • Seal any gaps in your walls that let in the hot outside air. Common culprits are plumbing outlets, vents and recessed light fixtures.
  • Check to see if your furnace and air conditioner filters need changing.
